What Is A Roller Screed

A roller screed contains a long metal tube with a handle on one end and an electric handle on the other. The operators walk behind the machine and hold the handle while the screed tube rotates to level the concrete. The roller screed tube can be customized to different lengths and shapes to suit almost any dump, including curb and gutter shapes.

5 Reasons To Invest In a Roller Screed

Not Only Ordinary Concrete But Also Pervious Concrete

Not Only Ordinary Concrete But Also Pervious Concrete

When it comes to creating pervious concrete, the roller screed is the best equipment for the pervious concrete pouring. This is because the pervious concrete roller screed doesn’t create any vibrations. Excessive vibration can damage the pervious concrete. Instead, the rotating screed tube flattens the concrete, making it perfect for use in pervious concrete projects. Plus, the lack of vibration means that the machine is much quieter than other types of equipment, making it ideal for use in noise-sensitive areas.

Avoid Injury

Avoid Injury

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, a large number of construction workers are injured every year. Compared with other types of screed machines, using a roller screed not only makes it easier for operators to use the machine, but also reduces their labor intensity and avoids back strain. When using the screed roller, the operator does not need to bend down, but only needs to pull the lever of the machine upright. This simple operation can effectively reduce labor intensity and avoid back strain for operators. In addition, this type of screed machine is also very easy to operate, even if you have never used it before, you can quickly get started after a few minutes of familiarization.

Easy Work On Slope

Roller screed is a useful tool for use in concrete construction projects on slopes. This type of screed uses a roller at the front to create an upward pull when rolling across the surface of the concrete, making it ideal for projects where sloping surfaces are involved. And it does not vibrate, the concrete does not slide down the ramp due to vibration. This feature makes it ideal for a variety of small embankments and ramps with slopes, in addition to common concrete slabs, sidewalks and the above mentioned pervious concrete projects.

Modular Screed Roller Tubes

The mahchine can be equipped with the roller screed tube syetem, which allows you to combine different lengths of roller tubes to meet your concrete levelling needs in different widths. The roller tube can be disassembled when not in use, and the modular design is also convenient for transport and storage of the machine.

Barn, Drainage Ditch And More Incredible Construction Applications

custom drum

Roller screed can be used with a center joint and various drum shapes for concrete tapered barn floors and various gutters. This provides a efficient way to create these specialized concrete surfaces.

Roller screeds have been used for years by many construction businesses around the world to create predictable and consistent results when pouring these specialized concrete surfaces. Their effectiveness for this task has made them an invaluable tool in any company’s arsenal of concrete finishing equipment.

How To Use

The machine consists of a roller tube attached to a power module, which is operated by a switch. The operator pulls the roller tube in the opposite direction to the screed’s rolling direction. During construction, the height of the concrete paving should be controlled according to the position of the roller tube. The operator has the ability to produce a very high-quality pour, with minimal training. Screeds are easy to operate and maintain and have a wide variety of uses. They can be used for both commercial and diy projects. Some models have variable speed controls, which make them even easier to use.

Before Starting

Before starting the roller screed, there are a few items that need to be checked to prevent damage or personal injury.

  • Make sure that both ends are securely fastened to the end of the pipe.
  • Check all threaded connections to make sure that they are not loose.
  • Check handles to make sure that they will not loosen or detach during the operation of the roller screed.

  1. Operating your roller screed correctly will assist you in achieving the desired outcome of a pour. Follow the instructions below to operate your screed correctly.
  2. Engage the power unit and begin to pull the roller screed over forms, screed pipe, or screed rail, distributing the concrete aggregate to the desired level. Make sure the pipe is spinning away from you.
  3. The roller screed is meant to run at a slow speed.
  4. Each operator must properly maintain control of both handles, guiding the pipe over the concrete aggregate at a speed and direction best suited for the aggregate’s respective slump.
  5. Do not allow either end of the unit to enter wet concrete. Keep each end on the forms, screed pipes, or screed rails to prevent contamination of the plugs or motor.
  6. If the concrete is not being added at the appropriate rate, slow the screed down to compensate.
  7. The speed at which the screed should be pulled back and forth depends on the slump of the concrete (see slump guidelines below). It is important to pay close attention to the aggregates, slump, and concrete modifying agents to compensate the speed of the engine adequately.
  8. Do not allow the roller screed to run in the same position for an extended period. If screeding is delayed, turn the engine off and let the roller screed sit in a position where it is best suited to start again. When the placement of aggregate resumes, slowly engage the engine and continue screeding.

Slump Guidelines
The roller screed will handle stiff concrete having only a 3-inch slump. When you first start using the roller screed, pour with a slump level that is consistent with your past practices. As with any new tool, certain operation techniques must be learned.

Wet Concrete Operating Method

Slump levels of 5 or more, maintain 1 to 2 inch surcharge

When working with wet concrete, start the roller screed, squeeze the throttle lever, and slowly pull it over the concrete while muckers maintain about a 2-inch surcharge of concrete in front of the screed. After advancing 6 to 8 feet, allow the spinning roller screed to move slowly backward over the freshly screeded concrete. This slow backwards pass pushes aggregate left on the surface down while bringing paste to the surface. After backing over the poured section, slow down the roller screed and pull the screed back to the area where more concrete has been placed. Begin screeding again. With concrete wetter than a 5-inch slump, pulling over the concrete surface a second time with the motor running will produce a flatter surface with sufficient paste for floating. Examine the surfaces prepared by the roller screed and adjust your technique to product the desired surface for floating.

Wet Concrete Operating Method

Stiff Concrete Operating Method

Slump levels of 3 to 4 inches, maintain 2.5 to 3.5 inch surcharge

With stiff concrete, pulling the roller screed over the concrete produces a rough surface that is difficult to float. To get the best results, use the “Bump and run” Technique. Start by squeezing the throttle lever to start the roller screed and gently bumping a 2-3-inch surcharge with the roller screed, causing it to advance a few inches, and then allow it to retreat 4 to 6 inches. Advance the roller screed again. Continue the “Bump and run” Technique until you have advanced 6 to 8 feet, then allow the roller screed to move backward slowly over the freshly screeded concrete with the roller screed still running. This slow backwards pass pushes aggregate left on the surface down while bringing paste to the surface. After backing over the poured section, turn off the roller screed and pull the screed back to the area where more concrete has been placed. Begin screeding again. The screeded section is ready for floating and should be done immediately. When screeding stiffer concrete, pulling the roller screed forward a second time tends to remove the layer of paste that has been worked to the surface and makes the surface more difficult to float and finish.

4 Types Of Roller Screed Purchasing Guide

This equipment is an important tool used in the process of leveling concrete. It ensures that the concrete is smooth and even, and helps to avoid any lumps or bumps. There are 3 main types – hydraulic, gasoline engine, electric and battery type. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages which you should consider before making a purchase.

  1. Hydraulic roller screed is the most powerful type, this type is represented by the supplier – bunyan striker. It is easy to operate and can level large areas of concrete quickly. However, it requires a hydraulic station to provide power and is less portable. And it is also the most expensive type.
  2. Gaspowered roller screed is less powerful than hydraulic type, but it is still able to level concrete effectively. The representative manufacturers of this type of product are lura and wildcat. It is more portable than hydraulic type and therefore can be used in tight spaces. And, gasoline engine roller screed is easier to operate than hydraulic type.
  3. Electric roller screed is the cheapest type. The representative manufacturer that produces this type is marshalltown. It is also very portable and easy to use. However, electric powered machine does not pack as much power as hydraulic or gasoline engine roller screeds.
  4. Battery powered roller screed is the least powerful type, but it is the easiest to operate. This type is represented by the supplier curbroller. It is also the most portable type of screed roller and can be used in tight spaces. However, electric screed roller is also the most expensive type of these machines. In addition, in larger projects, you need to prepare enough batteries to ensure its endurance.

In summary, it is important to consider your needs and budget when choosing a concrete screed roller. If you are looking for a powerful tool that can quickly level large areas of concrete, then you should consider purchasing a hydraulic or gasoline engine roller screed. If you are looking for an easy-to-use tool that can be used in tight spaces, then you should purchase an electric or battery operated model.

Maintenance Knowledge For Roller Screed

The machine should be cleaned in time after use to avoid corrosion of concrete. You just need to put the roller tube on the sand and turn it on, the concrete on top of the roller can be rubbed off. Then the connection is cleaned manually.

Batteries and electric machines require very little maintenance, with a full charge in battery storage. Only good cleaning and periodic lubrication are needed to keep these devices working properly. Hydraulic and gasoline machines, on the other hand, are powered by a gasoline engine that needs more attention to maintain. As such, it is important to follow the engine’s maintenance instructions for proper care of the machine.

In general, there is relatively little maintenance involved when using either batteries or electric machines. These devices can be stored with a full charge in their battery storage unit for long periods of time without any issues arising. However, hydraulic and gasoline machines do require more attention since they are powered by engines that need periodic tuning if they are used frequently or for long periods of time. As such, it is important to consult the engine’s maintenance instructions in order to keep these devices running properly.

Roller Screed VS Vibrating Screed

In the table below, we will compare some differences between roller screed and vibrating screed in detail.

Roller Screed Vibrating Screed
Working Width 1-10m 1-3m [*1]
Screed Type 5mm Aviation Aluminum Buttable Roller Tube Double / Single Layer Aviation Aluminum Screed Plate
Portability Very Portable Portable
Vibration Force No Vibration Force [*2] Have Vibration Force
Operation Mode Stand Up Bend Down
Number Of Operators 2 1
Formwork Need Need
Applied range All kind of concrete leveling projects (need and not need vibrating) , and concrete slope, permeable concrete, conical concrete surface and funnel-shaped concrete surface. Concrete leveling projects that need vibrating / Better for some small area concrete slab projects that need vibrating.

*1 It is not recommended to use screed plate exceeds 3m. Because vibrating power screed relies on the vibrating force to compact the concrete, When the working width exceeds 3m, the vibrating force on its sides will be insufficient and will not have a good compaction effect. In addition, the power screed just have one operator who has to bend down to operate it. When the width of the vibrating plate is wider than 3m, it will be very difficult for the operator to move it.

*2 The concrete vibrator can be used to vibrate the concrete alone, and the effect is better, so the roller screed can level the concrete that needs to be vibrated.

Roller screed can be an excellent investment for your business. Not only are they versatile machines that can be used in a variety of ways, but they also require very little maintenance to keep them running well.
